Steward Manor in Super 8: 100 Bryan Court, 1981

This is Super 8 footage from 1981, apparently filmed by my mom the day I got my first pair of (horrifically ugly) eyeglasses—which I understandably chose to wear only when absolutely necessary. Nonetheless, I’m certainly grateful to have this rare and all-too fleeting glimpse of my old building (100 Bryan Ct.) in 1981.

Looking past my terrible wardrobe (and the aforementioned bad glasses), you can see a number of details that are long lost—including the familiar white wooden fencing, the aluminum lamp post, the brown wooden door and painted porch, and the beautiful flowers that were lovingly tended by our upstairs neighbor, the late Jay Privette.

Jay Privette with my next door neighbor, young Mark Proffitt.

If you look closely at the background as I start walking toward the camera, you’ll see a blue mailbox just across Parkside Dr. Judging from the looks of the mailbox that sits there today, I’d be willing to bet it’s the very same one. It’s almost like a time machine; I’d like to think that I could drop a letter in there today, and it would somehow get back to me in 1981—and tell me to choose a better looking pair of glasses. 😉

About Richard Friend

I'm a graphic designer and creator of "Lost Laurel"—a collection of photos and print ephemera chronicling the countless stores, restaurants, and other long-lost merchants of Laurel, Maryland. I'm interesting in hearing from any former/current residents, especially those with vintage photos, literature, and recollections of the community. richardfrienddesign.com lostlaurel.com facebook.com/lostlaurel
